Nidal Kahl, Director of Biogen, is a food safety and food quality expert servicing the food and supplement industry for 20 years. He completed the Microbiology program at Oregon State University with a minor in Chemistry, and then went into research in the molecular sciences after being awarded a fellowship at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU). During this time Nidal took additional graduate courses at OHSU and post-bac courses at Portland State University to supplement his research in immunology and biochemistry. The focus of his research included DNA vaccines, recombinant protein expression and purification, as well as enzyme kinetics.

In 2000 he applied the technologies studied into the food industry and founded Biogen Laboratory Developments, LLC to provide a range of consulting, research and investigative analysis, and built a network of strategic partnerships to satisfy routine regulatory and food safety needs. Nidal has been in the National Registry of Microbiologists since 2002, and affiliated with the Oregon Institute of Food Technologists, American Society for Microbiology and the College of American Pathologists.

Nidal continues to provide food safety & quality consulting, regulatory compliance, routine analysis, research and product development, onsite inspections and training, process validation, investigations, environmental monitoring and quality system development and management within the food and supplement industry.

Nidal has been a part of the Laboratory Response Network for the State of Oregon since 2001 with a focus on lab preparedness and bioterrorism exercises and has played a vital role in improving food safety and quality standards for various Oregon industries from farms to retail. Under Nidal’s leadership, Biogen has expanded its food lab which has a reputation for outstanding service and rapid microbiological and food safety risk-based solutions not available in most other food laboratories. Method development is conducted daily on emerging pathogens and technologies intended to help demonstrate the safety, quality, purity, and authenticity of the foods their clients release to the marketplace.
